Thunder take the course at Bunker Hills
The Thunder golf team finally got the season rolling over the past week, at the Bunker Hills Invitational on May 1.
The Thunder recorded their best team score in Scott Baldwin’s tenure as head coach. Currently in his third year, Baldwin said the team has finished last in the invitational the past two years, so finishing ahead of four other teams with a team-best score was a tremendous accomplishment. He said that Tommy Laabs, Blake Johnson, Logan Botzek and Landon Wesloh have put together great starts to the season.
Up next, Zimmerman takes on multiple schools in an invitational on May 7.
Spring Preview: Zimmerman boys golf
Last Year: The Thunder experienced a rebuilding year last season, finishing last in the Granite Ridge Conference.
Head Coach: Scott Baldwin
Assistant Coach: Brett Phelps
Captain: Tommy Laabs
Key Returners: Tommy Laabs, Blake Johnson, Brett Howard
Potential Breakout Players: Blane Stumpf, Logan Botzek, Landon Wesloh, Dylan Rogers, Riley Klick
Coach Says: “Last year was a rebuilding year with several seventh-, eighth- and nine-graders. We should be a lot better this season. In the Granite Ridge, St. Cloud Cathedral and Becker have solid programs, but I believe we will be much more competitive this year; it should be an exciting season.”
Outlook: As Coach Baldwin alluded to, the team should improve from one year ago, but they still look to be a year or two away from being serious contenders in the conference and section. That being said, they are moving into a different section this year, so it’s not out of the question that they could make some noise against new competition.
