ZHS track has two new head coaches
Come spring 2018, a couple new faces will be at the head of the coaching positions for the Zimmerman boys and girls track teams.
Cassandra Olson and Mike Back both accepted their jobs in the last couple weeks, making them the new head coaches of the girls and boys teams respectively.
“We are looking forward to an exciting spring season with Cassandra and Mike leading our track athletes,” Zimmerman Activities Director Jaime Hilyar said in a statement to the Star News on Nov. 9.
Back has a rich history in coaching, beginning in the spring of 1998 at Wayzata High School. Back has also coached at Cooper and now Zimmerman. He began the cross-country program for the Thunder seven years ago and has been the only head coach that program has had in its short history.
“I have had some wonderful parent volunteers that have made that possible,” Back said.
Back has been an assistant track coach for the Thunder since he arrived at the school 10 years ago, mostly working with the distance runners. At Wayzata, Back worked with the distance runners as well as the high jumpers and the throwers and at Cooper, he worked with the distance runners and helped with the middle school program.
“I am excited about getting more kids out for track and building on last year’s successes,” Back said. “We are/were very young and I look forward to building as our athletes age and grow as athletes.”
Back has a split teaching position at Zimmerman where he works with second language students and teaches physical education.
Olson is listed as a special education assistant in the Elk River Area School District’s staff directory. She didn’t respond when contacted for this story.
